GIPA-ART Adherence Case Management Project

GIPA – Adherence case management project is aimed to improve clients’ retention in care and enhance patients’ adherence to their ARV drug by enrolling in continuum of care.

Target Group :- All clients at risk of non-adherence to recommended treatment and care

Project Area :-Amhara region, 192 ART providing health facilities

 

According to federal minister of health, there are about 742,500 people who are HIV positives and only 60% of them identified and put on ART. Thus, to identify those who are positive and link them on treatment, the government of Ethiopia designed the three 90s’ strategy. The involvement of HIV+ people plays a paramount role for its achievement. This project entitled ‘GIPA-ACM Project’ is one among the involvement and contribution of PLHIVs for the response designed under the three 90s’.

The project is under implementation since 2011 by the support of CDC through NEP+. Currently, the project is being implemented with new funding agreement in PEPFAR selected 192 health facilites .

Moreover, the project is intended to improve adherence to care and treatment with peer counseling approach through sharing Case Managers personal testimonies and strengthen referral linkage from health facilities to community who have different resources; and track clients who missed their date of appointment and bring back to care. Adherence case managers and adherence supporters play as a bridge between the health facility that provide treatment service and  the client who receive the service.In addition, they also help to connect community resources required to fulfill multiple needs and the needy clients providing ART service in the region.  To have proper service delivery, 339 Adherence case managers and 111 adherence supporters had been engaged in the aforementioned facilities. For the effectiveness of its management health facilitates of West Amhara coordinated by NAP+ and East Amhara sites coordinated by Addis Hiwot Rehabilitation & Reintegration Association located at Dessie town under the oversee of NAP+.

Project Beneficiaries

All PLHIVs who have enrolled in ART service and their families are direct project beneficiaries.

Project Location

The project had been implementing in 222 Health Facilities(40 Hospitals and 182 Health Centers) of Amhara region.

Goal of the project

The overall goal of the project is to improve clients’ adherence and retention by providing effective and appropriate services to meet their multiple needs.

Objectives

  • Ensure there is a continuum of care for clients on chronic care:
  • Ensuring linkages between the health facility that provides ART treatment and the community resources that provide additional services and support to HIV positive clients;
  • Ensure adherence to treatment and care by monitoring clients once enrolled in chronic care or ART has been initiated and tracing and then managing those who drop out of treatment (those lost to follow-up).
